Tracking blood sugar with an app

If carrying a logbook is a hassle, or your written numbers are hard to read at a glance, a tracking app can help. Your phone is almost always with you.

What to look for in an app

Why logging in an app helps

As readings add up, the app works out averages and trends for you. Patterns such as fasting numbers creeping up over a few weeks, or a particular meal that sends your numbers higher, are easy to miss on paper.

Reminders also make it less likely you'll forget an after-meal check.

Decide these three things first

  1. One time point you'll check every day (for example, fasting in the morning)
  2. Your target range (the numbers from your care team)
  3. Your unit (mg/dL or mmol/L)

This article is general health information and does not replace diagnosis or treatment. Targets and how often to check differ from person to person, so follow your care team first. If you have symptoms of low blood sugar or readings far outside your range, contact your care team right away.
