Why it helps to track weight alongside blood sugar
On their own, weight and blood sugar are just numbers. Side by side over the same period, they make it easier to look back on changes in your habits.
Weigh yourself under the same conditions
- Weigh in the morning after using the bathroom and before breakfast.
- Wear similar (or light) clothing each time.
- Use the same scale on a flat, hard floor.
Weekly trends over daily numbers
Body weight easily moves 1–2 lb (0.5–1 kg) in a day from water, salt, or digestion. Rather than reacting to each day's number, watch how your weekly average moves.
Looking at both together
- What your fasting blood sugar looked like during a period of weight gain
- How weight and after-meal readings changed after you changed your meals
- Whether both numbers wobbled during a week you felt unwell
Seeing both trends on one screen makes it easier to remember what you changed when things improved. Set any weight goals together with your care team.
This article is general health information and does not replace diagnosis or treatment. Targets and how often to check differ from person to person, so follow your care team first. If you have symptoms of low blood sugar or readings far outside your range, contact your care team right away.
